Checklist for Changing Your Legal Name

Checklist for Changing Your Legal Name

Whether it's for marriage, divorce or a court order, there are a number of steps you need to take to change your legal name.

First, you will need to go to a local office for the Social Security Administration and complete an application to update your legal name. You will need to provide documentation that proves your identity (e.g. a driver's license) and supports your request for the change (e.g. marriage license, divorce decree, etc.)

Next, you should go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to obtain an updated state-issued identification card. With your documentation from the Social Security Administration and updated state-issued identification, you should go to your bank to change how your name appears on your accounts. Once your name change is on file with your bank, come on back to Checks Unlimited and shop our entire inventory of check designs available!

Following these changes, you'll want to contact all of your credit providers (e.g. mortgage company, credit cards, etc.) in addition to your employer and health care providers to update your personal information.
