If you have a Facebook account, you’ve likely seen the “Secret Sister” post either on your friend’s status or in a trending topic. Here’s what it says:

While it sounds enticing, it’s nothing more than another chain letter. According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, it’s illegal “if they request money or other items of value and promise a substantial return to the participants.”

An exception to this type of chain letter posting, of course, is if several people you personally know and trust decide to share in the holiday spirit amongst yourselves with an anonymous gift exchange.
